यथा लगति हृत्कण्ठे कपालावधि सस्वनम् ।
वेगेन पूरयेच्चापि हृत्पद्मावधि मारुतम् ।।
पुनर्विरचयेत्तद्वत पूरयेच्च पुनः पुनः ।
यथैव लोहकारेण भस्त्रा वेगेनचाल्यते
तथैव स्वशरीरस्थं चालयेत् पवनं घिया।।

Bhastrika Pranayama

Bhastrika means bellows of blacksmith. Like bellows Poorak & Rechak are done rapidly. Act of exhalation is more forceful and quick, compare to inhalation which is rather slow and less forceful.

Poorak and Rechak are performed again and again quickly and with force hence the name is Bhastrika Pranayama.

One experiences disease free condition and joyous as well as peaceful mental feeling after regular practice.

In this Pranayama the heart rate, bodily temperature and sweating may increase.

Benefits
This Pranayama is useful for Kundalini awakening.

  • This Pranayama can be done in all seasons.
  • By doing Bhastrika Pranayama all the three dosha (Vata, Pitt and Kapha) are maintained in a balanced state.
  • It removes cold, headache and sinus.
  • It improves memory.
  • Wind pipe is completely open.
  • Bodily fire increases.
  • Extra secretion of mucus is stopped.
  • It will cleanses all the Nadis and stimulate sacral part more.


Precuations
Persons having high blood pressure, insomnia, mental or emotional disturbance should avoid this Pranayama.

Those who have heart trouble or high blood pressure should not do this Pranayama.

In case there is sense of suffocation at any stage of this Pranayama, stop the practice and consult the Yoga expert/teacher.

This will remove unnecessary air from your lungs and easiest way to throw out bacterias from your body.


Technique

  • Sit in Padamasana or Sukhasana.
  • Keep the chest, neck, and head straight.
  • Close the mouth tightly and your eyes are closed.
  • Close the left nostril with the help of your left thumb, now breath in (Poorak) and breath out (Rechak) with force by the left nostril; repeat the process 10 times, making sound of the bellows of the blacksmith.
  • Close the right nostril with the help of your right thumb, now breath in (Poorak) and breath out (Rechak) with force by the right nostril; repeat the process 10 times, making sound of the bellows of the blacksmith.
  • Now breath in (Poorak) and breath out (Rechak) with force by the both nostril; repeat the process 20 times, making sound of the bellows of the blacksmith.
  • After finishing above 3 steps, relax yourself for minimum 30 seconds; while relaxing bring all your attention to Agya (Ajna) Chakra.
